The grand 18th century mansion of Elsington Park lies near the River Aln just west of Whittingham and close to Gateshead in Northumberland. The park and area of Eslington was first mentioned in 1335 during the reign of Edward III, and Eslington Hall has had many prominent owners, including the High Sheriff of Northmberland and Sir Robert Collingwood, while today it remains the family seat of Lord Ravensworth. It is not surprising that the extensive grounds and park were used for racing in the late 1800s. However, what is remarkable is that there appears to have been only one meeting held on 1st January 1881.
